Choosing an adoption agency is a lot like a job interview. They ask you questions, you ask them questions, etc. But remember - you're interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. Never be afraid to ask important questions. The right adoption agency will embrace your enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge! Not sure what to ask? Here's a great starting point:
Do you support open adoption?
Open adoption is the preferred method of both birth and adoptive parents. It also supports a healthy upbringing for the adopted child. Open adoption should always be offered, if not encouraged by all adoption agencies. If an adoption agency only offers closed adoptions, look elsewhere. You can find the agency that supports your wishes. AdoptList not only supports open adoption, but sees it as the norm of infant adoption.
Will you help me to truly understand adoption and the possible outcomes?
Not all adoptions have a picture-perfect ending. Every adoption will have ups and downs, and your adoption agency should prepare you for that. AdoptList believes in honesty and respect. We will never sugarcoat or over-sensationalize any situation.
Will you present options other than adoption?
Of course adoption is not the only solution to an unplanned pregnancy. You may also choose to parent. A good adoption agency will make sure you have weighed all of your options before making a final decision. Both options have benefits and both options have drawbacks. AdoptList will talk you through both, and encourage you to choose the path that is best for you.
Do you offer pre and post adoption counseling?
This is a big one. Choosing to give a baby up for adoption is a life-altering decision. Many birthparents require counseling or additional help to move forward. Will your adoption agency offer counseling before, during and after the adoption process? AdoptList takes pride in being present for our birthmothers whenever they need us. That includes after the adoption is finalized.
What makes an adoptive family qualified to adopt?
Every adoption agency has a process of how their adoptive families are screened. Ask the adoption agency what that process is, and how you can be sure their families are prepared to offer a safe and loving home to your child. AdoptList only works with families who are legally qualified to adopt a baby, and have all undergone a thorough homestudy and background check.
What if I change my mind and decide to keep the baby?
Adoption agencies are in business to facilitate adoptions. That being said, it is not uncommon that a birthmother will change her mind and decide to parent. It is important to make sure that the adoption agency is not binding you to any contracts or agreements until after you have given birth and relinquished your child. AdoptList will support you no matter what you decide. We will never use persuasion or force. The decision is 100% yours.
If a problem occurs during the process, will you act as a mediator?
Sometimes misunderstandings happen between the birth and adoptive parents. When this happens, it’s important to have an adoption agency that will support both families equally and respectfully. AdoptList will never leave you on your own. We will always be here to support, guide and mediate you through any unforeseen issues.
Are there any birthmothers who have worked with you that I can talk to?
Asking for a real-life reference is a great way to better understand adoption. After speaking with a previous birthmother, also look into the agency's online reviews and social media presence. AdoptList makes it a priority to keep their social media pages fresh and up-to-date, to assure birthmothers we’re active in our adoption efforts.
What birthmother resources do you offer?
Most adoption agencies offer birthmothers additional resources outside of their basic adoption services. If they don’t, it might be time to look into a different adoption agency. AdoptList provides birthmothers with a handful of resources to consider, including a detailed birthmother packet, blog, social media pages and more.
Can I call you any time?
Having the comfort of knowing your adoption agency is available at all hours of the day is extremely important. What if you go into labor early? What if there is a pregnancy related emergency? What if you just need emotional support? AdoptList is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to take your call.
