Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy is never easy. We respect your courage. Before committing to an adoption plan, it is important to understand the steps involved in the adoption process. From contacting an adoption coordinator, choosing a family and preparing for delivery, AdoptList makes it easy to learn about adoption.
Contact an Adoption Facilitator
You have already completed this first step by calling us or emailing us for this information. Once you have finished reading this packet, the next step is contact us directly via phone, email or a live chat on our website. An adoption coordinator will provide an overview of the adoption process and let you know what to do next.
Learn about Adoption
Our website is full of important adoption information. Visit our blog and frequently asked questions page for detailed information about pregnancy and adoption. When you’re ready, contact us to get started with your personal adoption plan.
Create Your Adoption Plan
Choose an adoptive family from the adoptive parent profiles on AdoptList.com. Decide on how much contact you want with the adoptive family before, during and after birth. This includes phone calls, visits, pictures, letter updates or no contact (closed adoption). You can also choose to speak with other birthmothers to better understand what to expect. For example, how to prepare for the hospital experience and what will happen when you go into labor.
Meet with an adoption social worker
We will set this up for you AT NO COST. The meeting is an opportunity for you to let the social worker know of your needs and learn how the process works.
Place your baby with the adoptive family
The baby will go directly to the family straight from the hospital without intermediate foster care. However, you will have time to hold your baby and get to know your baby before he/she leaves the hospital with the adoptive family.
Post Adoption
The post adoption experience is different for every birthmother. You may experience a handful of emotions that at times will be good and other times be difficult. All birthmothers are encouraged to create a post- adoption plan. Will you return to school or work? Will you join an adoption support group? Your adoption coordinator will help you create a post adoption plan that works for you.
